Head of School Blog – First Days of School

Dear Parents,

The first couple of days of school have been busy, exciting, and confusing – all at the same time. However, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s what goes along with 340 energetic, mission-appropriate students coming back from summer break, seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and sharing their summer experiences with teachers. Priceless!

My last blog outlined the wonderful things currently underway at Donoho. In this one, I would like to address some ideas we are working on and will act on in the near future.

What does Donoho hope to accomplish in the coming years? (These are not in specific order!)

  • Grow our professional development budget by 50%
  • Implement bus routes in areas outside the city limits
  • Have teachers trained in how to address learning differences
  • Designate specific teachers to receive training in Orton Gillingham
  • Develop standards and skill sets for each grade level (PK3-12)
  • Grow our community outreach activities and student leadership opportunities
  • Revamp our current website
  • Develop effective communication strategies across the divisions and community
  • Organize and host a robust college fair
  • Organize a group (made of parents, students, teachers) to study school uniforms
  • Continue to grow our financial aid resources
  • Re-energize the capital campaign to enhance our current facilities
  • Offer students an ACT prep course and Math prep during enrichment
  • Develop a schedule that allows students to choose enrichment course: robotics, drama, fitness, jazz band, etc.
  • The list goes on!!

I invite your feedback on any of these topics and would enjoy a conversation.

All the best,
James
