Parent’s Night – Monday, August 26

Plans have been finalized for this year’s annual Parents’ Night Open House for all grade levels. We hope you will make plans to attend this event Monday evening, August 26.

Lower school visits to the classrooms will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please report to your child’s homeroom for a brief presentation concerning course expectations and ideas to enhance your child’s learning opportunities. Following the homeroom teacher’s presentation, you may visit enrichment and other academic teachers. If you have multiple children, you may choose to utilize this time to meet each homeroom teacher.

In the middle and upper school, please report directly to the room of your child’s advisor at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards, you will have the chance to visit elective and other academic teachers where you will receive information about each course as well as ways to help your child maximize his/her learning experience for the year.

You are also invited to meet our private music instructors to discuss opportunities for scheduling piano, voice, guitar, or violin lessons. They will be in the LS lobby area and the US library during each event.

We are pleased to welcome back our returning teachers:

Patsy Bateman — piano

Donna May — piano

Abby Parks — guitar

Karolyn Rice — piano

We are also pleased to introduce our two new instructors:

Diane Chong — violin

Connie Durham — voice

Mrs. Chong (mother of Paul ’13) has performed as first violinist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Christian Broadcast Orchestra, and Gadsden Symphony Orchestra. She has been a private instructor of violin since 1990 and was named the AL Chapter of the American String Teachers’ Association Strings Teacher of the Year in 2010. Diane was graduated from the Sook Myung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, with a major in violin performance and a minor in piano performance.

Ms. Durham (known locally to many as Connie Hancock) was graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor’s degree in music education; she studied both piano and vocal performance. She has coached several students in private voice lessons, including Teresa Cheatham Stricklin ’76, who was Miss Alabama, talent winner in the Miss Alabama and Miss America pageants, and first alternate to Miss America. Connie was the music director for more than twenty years at Grace Episcopal Church and has performed in and directed dozens of local theater performances.

We hope you plan to attend as we ring in another great year at The Donoho School.
