Outstanding Alumni Testimonial: Mrs. Joanne King Pope, ’70

Mrs. Joanne King Pope is a retired special education instructor who has held various positions at the ARC of Calhoun & Cleburne Counties and is currently the co-director of the Interfaith Ministries’ Meals on Wheels program. She received a B.A. of psychology from Florida Southern College in 1974, her M.S. Ed. from Jacksonville State University in 1978 and a degree in educational administration from Jacksonville State University in 1982.

Mrs. Pope has served on the board of directors for the Jacksonville Civitan Club, Anniston Civitan Club, Calhoun Cleburne Association for Retarded Citizens (former president), Calhoun Cleburne Mental Health (former vice-president), Longleaf Arts Council (current secretary), Cheaha Creative Arts (current secretary), Meals on Wheels and Women Empowered (former secretary).

Mrs. Pope has received recognition for her civic service by being named the 1990 Calhoun County Arc Volunteer of the Year, 2000 Kiwanis Teacher of the Month (Jacksonville City Schools), 2001 Arc Administrator of the Year, 2004 Arc Lolan Granger Award and the 2006 Arc Miss D Award. She has written and implemented several grants during her professional endeavors and served as a Special Olympics coach for two years.

She is the daughter of the late Dr. Tom and Mrs. Joanne King. Mrs. Pope is married to Tommy Pope. She currently resides in Anniston, Alabama.
